Painted Pottery Jar with Hermaphrodite Decoration (about 5,000 years old)

Unearthed from Liuwan in Ledu County, Qinghai Province, in 1974, this 33.4 cm –high jar belongs to the Majiayao Culture. Painted on it is a human figure with a woman’s breasts and male reproductive organs. The decoration is thought to be a fertility symbol.
