Huang Gu

Wine vessel, Late Shang Dynasty
Height: 27.3cm
Mouth diameter: 16cm
Weight: 1,040g

The character of "Huang" (literally, yellow) is engraved on the inner wall of this vessel, hence its name. This Gu is elegantly shaped and has gorgeous ornaments. The body can be divided into three sections - each has diverse designs in proportion to its area. Four plantain leaves are depicted on the neck, giving the appearance of a blooming flower. There are four ridges and two sets of symmetrical dragon designs on the belly and the loop base, which correspond to the plantain leaves. The dragon designs on the loop base are especially magnificent, in which openwork skill is employed, something rarely seen in the Shang Dynasty.
