Cloisonne Enamel

Cloisonne Enamel

Also called "enamel patterns on porcelain roughcast", cloisonné enamel is a new type of porcelain glazed with colorful enamels, which is manufactured by applying colorful enamel materials on the porcelain body and then firing the resultant products.

Started in the late years of Emperor Kangxi in the Qing Dynasty, cloisonné enamel saw its further development in the reign of Emperor Yongzheng. As a precious technique monopolized by the imperial court, the manufacturing of cloisonné enamel in the reigns of Emperor Kangxi and Emperor Yongzheng was conducted in the following procedures: First the plain porcelain fired in the Jingdezhen Official Kiln with the choicest raw material would be delivered to the imperial court, then the plain porcelain would be painted by professional court painters, and finally the painted products would be fired in the court's furnace at a lower temperature. No other porcelain products could rival cloisonné enamel in the procedures and raw materials involved.

Cloisonné enamel is fine and glossy, with dignified pigmentation, bright and beautiful luster, and elaborate painting. The technique for cloisonné enamel peaked in the reign of Emperor Yongzheng. The patterns are mostly flowers, but also include landscapes and human figures. The most outstanding characteristics for this genre of technique are the poem inscribed on the paintings in expert calligraphy, and the seals of white or vermilion rouge inscriptions. In it are perfectly blended the traditional Chinese painting and calligraphy with porcelain making, reflecting a strong national characteristic.
