'Carol' leads London film critics annual awards shortlist

The London Film Critics' Circle revealed its shortlist for the 2015 awards on Tuesday afternoon, with the romantic drama "Carol" leading the pack for nominations with a total of seven.

Kate Blanchett and Rooney Mara both add to "Carol's" total, with nominations in the lead actresses category.

Just behind "Carol" is "45 Years", a British film about a wedding anniversary starring Charlotte Rampling and Tom Courtenay, who are both nominated in their respect lead actor categories. It has six nominations.

The Hollywood blockbusters "Mad Max: Fury Road" and "Steve Jobs" each pick up five nominations as does "The Revenant", starring Leonardo DiCaprio.

The shortlists in all 16 categories are nominated by the 140 members of the Critics' Circle film section.

"Our critics nominated more than 200 titles for Film of the Year alone, representing the range of wide opinions and the sheer number of movies critics watch each year," said Rich Cline, chair of the Critics' Circle Film Awards.

The awards will be made at a presentation in central London on Jan. 17.
